Featured Artist: Ellen Surrey

Today’s feature is Ellen Surrey, an illustrator from L.A. I came across her illustrations while browsing one of my favourite online publications, Juxtapoz Magazine, and instantly fell in love with her work.

ESurrey6Ellen is inspired by vintage children’s books. Her work definitely carries a sense of nostalgia.

ESurrey3 Her colour choices, and the simplicity of her style evoke a 1950’s aesthetic.

I love how she integrates pattern into many of her works. Ellen has worked with some really impressive clients, such as The New Yorker (the image above!) The Wall Street Journal, and Google just to name a few!

Ellen uses a really lovely mix of hand drawn/painted elements fused with digital technology. Most if not all of the work I looked at was made using Gouache and digital medium. I am interested in this type of fusion between the handmade and the digital.

I love to see how other artists fuse together traditional techniques with digital technology. Super inspiring! 🙂

Please visit Ellen’s website to see more of her work!
