Hope everyone’s week is going well so far! Mine has been a little rocky, but I’m keeping my cool. I have sooo many projects on the go right now, and a few changes going on in my professional life as well. It’s been crazy, but thank god I have a bright little studio!…it’s a little messy…but isn’t that how it’s supposed to be??
I don’t know if I ever told you guys about this little space. This is where I do all of my sketching, drawing, painting…imagining. This is just one little corner of a spare room in my apartment. The other half is the office-computery area. Anyhow. I just love my little studio space, and I could easily hang out there all day every day, but alas it cannot be! I have found that most professional creative people spend significantly more time corresponding to emails, making phone calls, and attending meetings, and writing for grants than actually sitting down to paint, draw, etc. I wish I could spend more time in the studio, but I do what I can and try to make it work! When I’m away for too long, and haven’t picked up a pencil in a while, I actually go into a strange sort of funk! I get down…and I feel very un-productive. Weird huh? Anyhow here are a few things I’ve been working on in my studio lately…
Lately I’ve been really into lettering. I’m dying to learn calligraphy and I just can’t wait to get myself to the library because there is an amazing modern calligraphy book waiting there for me! I’ve always had the most terrible chicken scratch writing (some people tell me it’s not THAT bad). I’ve been looking at some beautiful handmade paper products, and I have been really inspired by some of the calligraphy I’ve seen. It is really it’s own art, and as my guy said the other night “It looks like a drawing”. SO TRUE! That must be why I’m so drawn to it. Anyhow, I’ve never been into lettering and type before but ever since I started designing I just can’t get enough. It’s like a chip addiction!! So I’ll keep you all posted on my adventures in calligraphy.
I’ve also been really trying to play around with my illustration skills over the holiday break. I vowed that I would try to give myself more time to play around in the studio. Just sit and doodle..and not be so serious! Try new ways of doing things, and experiment with lines and colours. Above is a page FULL of little elephants. I was working out a design idea for a new greeting card for Double Dare (my screen printing business)
WELL that’s it for today! I have so much ahead of me this week I gotta get to it! Have a great weeeeeeeeeeek!
